Smithtown Girls Lacrosse Holding the first Cynthia Prag game

May 11, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

The Cynthia Prag Scholarship Fund game will be played by the Smithtown West Varsity Girls Lacrosse Team on May 12, 2015. The game will be held on the Smithtown West athletic turf field at 5 p.m. A dedication in Cynthia’s honor will be made at the start of the game.

Cynthia was a Smithtown High School West graduate of 2010 and attended Oneonta State University, where she played two years of collegiate lacrosse. As an avid soccer and lacrosse player, Cynthia embodied the qualities of team work, sportsmanship, and passion.

Although a fierce competitor, Cynthia’s warm and embracing spirit is what truly makes her memorable. With this scholarship dedicated, they intend to continue to remember Cynthia as the beautiful person and strong athlete she was. Cynthia passed away on October 9, 2014 in a car accident.

The team decided they wanted to have a game each year honoring her and to raise money for a scholarship in her name given to a senior girls lacrosse player.

NY Live, an organization who promotes organ donation, will be at the game with a tent promoting and explaining organ donation.

Cynthia’s family donated 8 of her organs to patients who were on the organ donation list and it is an organization which is very important to her family.

The team is expecting quit a few alumni, family, and friends of Cynthia in attendance. They hope you can come to the beginning of their game vs Lindenhurst at 4:45pm.

Those who attend, please support Cynthia by wearing Rainbow items of clothing!

The recipient of the Cynthia Prag Scholarship will be awarded at the end of season awards ceremony by Head Coach Carrie Bodo.

Make-A-Wish Volleyball Fundraiser

May 8, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

Students in Mark Marchino’s science class at Edmund W. Miles Middle School got a chance to take their fundraising bragging rights onto the volleyball court in a friendly contest against faculty members on April 24.
As a reward for being the homeroom that gathered the most amount of change in the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s “Coins for Wishes” challenge, the students faced off against their teachers and administrators in front of a packed gymnasium of boosters.

The Coins for Wishes challenge was carried out by members of Edmund W. Miles’s National Junior Honor Society, who placed coin boxes in each homeroom and collected the boxes at the end of each week throughout the month of March. All told, Edmund W. Miles raised $1,880.60, placing second among other schools that participated in the challenge. The NJHS met with Make-A-Wish recipients at the TD Bank in Lake Ronkonkoma last month. Mr. Marchino’s class raised $500 of the total amount raised by the school.

Continuing Life’s Legacy

May 6, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

Rocky Point’s baseball teams once again gave their time and talents to raise money for the Live Like Susie Scholarship.

Under the leadership of the varsity team, the middle school and junior varsity teams collaborated to raise money for the cause, which is given to a senior in honor of Susie Facini, a Rocky Point alumnus who passed away suddenly at the age of 20.

For the second year, the varsity team dedicated their game against Mt. Sinai to the cause, and both teams made donations to the fund. Susie’s parents were present during the game. Mr. Facini threw out the first pitch before he and his wife were presented with a commemorative ball signed by the team and flowers.

Men’s Basketball Volunteers at The Mary Brennan Inn

May 6, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (May 4, 2015) – The LIU Post men’s basketball team gave a helping hand before the start of final exams to volunteer at the Mary Brennan Inn, a soup kitchen for residents in Hempstead.

During their visit, they assisted in feeding residents and handing out care packages to those in need.

“My staff and I are teaching our student-athletes the importance of being involved in the community, as well as being thankful for the little things in life that we take for granted,” Head Coach Erik Smiles said. “The experience that our young men received today was both humbling and gratifying, and we will continue to teach life lessons to our student-athletes.”

The Mary Brennan Inn addresses the issues of hunger and homelessness on Long Island by providing food, shelter, long-term housing and supportive services in a dignified and respectful manner for those who seek help. They are a non-for-profit, volunteer-based organization with a dedicated staff.

For information on the Mary Brennan Inn, or to donate, please visit www.The-Inn.org.

Ballplayers Show Support and Awareness

May 5, 2015 By Team Up 4 Community

The High School East varsity baseball team showed support for a teammate and cancer awareness during a recent home game.

Player Joe Stopsky’s mother Linda is currently undergoing treatment for cervical cancer. To support the family and the cause, the HSE baseball players and coaches donned special shirts during an April game vs. Half Hollow Hills East. The HHHE players also showed their support by wearing alternate uniforms for the game. Linda Stopksy was present and honored before the game (pictured).

“These are the things that make a memorable and meaningful experience for students, parents, school staff, coaches and community members,” said Smithtown CSD Coordinator of Physical Education, Health, Athletics and Nurses Patrick Smith. “Coach Ken Klee and his players have a full understanding of the impact sports have and the life lessons kids acquire through athletics. Down the road, kids won’t remember the score of the game but they will remember the significance of it.”

Special thanks to Port Jefferson Sports for providing the T-shirts.
